SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Explorers' softball team lost both games in today's doubleheader against conference rival St. Louis. La Salle lost a close first game, 5-6, before getting shutout 6-0 in the second.
The Explorers looked as if they would coast to a comfortable win the first game of the series, tallying five runs through five and a half innings. La Salle struck first on an
Emily Moran single down the left field line to score freshman
Genevieve Gaynor who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. La Salle totaled three runs in the third – two of which came from an RBI triple from senior
Tristan Musho down the right field line to score freshmen
Casey Lester and
Kendra Heyer.
After the play, freshman
Alli Waddington came in to pinch run for Musho and was driven in by a single up the middle courtesy of senior
Liz Reed. Heyer scored again in the fifth off a bunt single from sophomore
Alicia Aughton to give the Explorers a cool 5-1 lead over the Billikens through five innings of play. Saint Louis, however, refused to let the Explorers have the upper hand as they scored five runs on three hits to take a 6-5 advantage with just one at-bat left for La Salle. The Explorers could not respond and ultimately lost the first of two games.
After both teams recorded ten hits each in game one, the Explorers managed just three hits and zero runs while the Billikens notched six runs on six hits to sweep the series. The entirety of the game was scoreless barring the bottom of the first where Saint Louis scored all six runs of the game on just three hits.
Lester singled to the pitcher and Hodgson singled up the middle in the third while freshman
Alyssa Sims notched an infield single in the fifth to give the Explorers their third hit.
With the pair of losses this afternoon the Explorers slip to 13-22 on the season and have fallen into a nine-game losing streak dating back to April 6. The La Salle softball squad returns to Philadelphia to prepare for a seven-game home stand starting Tuesday, April 16 as they take of the Drexel Dragons starting at 3 PM.
