PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball team lost both games in today's conference doubleheader against the Dayton Flyers, 9-6 and 7-1, respectively.
The Explorers scored six runs on just four hits in game one, largely due to a grand slam in the fourth from junior
Megan Hodgson, who recorded five RBIs in the game. The inning started with a walk by sophomore
Kristin Travers followed by two quick outs. Sophomore
Alyssa Bitsimis provided a double to left center which setup another walk, this time from freshman
Kendra Heyer. A third walk in the inning from senior
Liz Reed gave La Salle its second run of the afternoon but they still trailed 5-2. With the bases loaded, two outs, and the Explorers in dire need a big inning, Hodgson delivered with a long ball over the left field wall to give La Salle a 6-5 lead.
Dayton wasn't discouraged, however, as the Flyers tallied two runs in the sixth to take the lead once again, 7-6. With an additional two runs in the seventh, Dayton ultimately got the best of La Salle, winning with a score of 9-6.
Bitsimis recorded two doubles on the day – the first came in the form of a leadoff double to left field in the third and her second was prior to Hodgson's grand slam in the fourth. Heyer added an infield single in the third inning.
The Flyers held La Salle to just three hits and one run in the second game of today's doubleheader. That single run came oddly in the second inning after freshman
Alyssa Sims drew herself into a run-down, enabling freshman
Casey Lester to make a dash for home from third base.
Heyer got La Salle started with a single to lead off the bottom first. Lester and Travers reached base in the second inning on a single and double, respectively. The Explorers were hitless after the second inning.
The Explorers return to West Campus Field on Tuesday, April 23 for a doubleheader against the UMBC Retrievers scheduled to begin at 3 PM. The following day, La Salle will take on George Washington for another conference doubleheader, also set to begin at 3 PM.
