PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball squad split today's non-conference doubleheader against the UMBC Retrievers, losing the first game in an offensive onslaught 13-10 and winning the second game 3-2.
The Explorers fought hard in game one, tallying 10 runs on 10 hits including four homeruns. Junior
Megan Hodgson continued her dominance at the plate, batting 3 for 4 with an RBI double in the first, scoring freshman
Casey Lester, and a three-run homerun in the fourth to drive in freshman
Kendra Heyer and Lester.
Freshman
Alli Waddington notched her first collegiate homerun in the fourth, bringing home senior
Liz Reed. Reed herself recorded a solo homerun over the centerfield wall in the second inning, her second of the season.
Sophomore pitcher
Alicia Aughton helped herself out with a solo shot over the left center wall in the third. Senior
Tristan Musho doubled in the third, driving in Hodgson and Heyer.
Despite the strong offensive showing, the Explorers ultimately fell short in the first game. However, it was the most amount of runs La Salle has scored in a single game since its 15-0 victory against Morgan State on March 15.
Game two was an entirely different showing as both teams were held to a combined five runs as the Explorers edged the Retrievers 3-2.
UMBC struck first in the top of the third, scoring one run on an RBI single to right field. The Explorers answered in the next inning as junior
Emily Moran singled through the left side, driving in sophomore
Kristin Travers and Waddington. In the next at-bat, sophomore
Alyssa Bitsimis reached on an error by the shortstop which enabled Moran to score from second, giving La Salle a 3-1 advantage.
UMBC tacked on one more run in the following inning but that's all they would score as the Explorers snapped a 13 game losing streak.
Hodgson recorded another double in game two to lead off the fifth while Lester produced an infield single in the fourth and notched a stolen base in the third. Travers laid down a bunt single in the fourth which ultimately setup Moran to drive her in.
The Explorers square off against the George Washington Colonials on Wednesday, April 24 for a conference matchup scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
