PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball squad improved to 16-29 on the season and remain 3-17 in conference play as they toppled Rider 5-1 this afternoon.
The Explorers were efficient at the plate, scoring five runs on five hits including a two-run homerun off the bat of junior
Emily Moran in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie, giving La Salle a 3-1 advantage.
Rider struck first, scoring one run on three hits in the top of the first. Freshman pitcher
Mary Cate Scott settled down and provided six scoreless innings following the first, setting up La Salle to take the win.
The Explorers fired back with a run in the bottom first thanks to an RBI lineout to center, scoring freshman
Kendra Heyer. After scoreless second, third, and fourth innings, freshman
Genevieve Gaynor reached first on a walk and was replaced by pinch runner
Alyssa Sims. Moran then blasted a two-run shot over the right-center wall, her first homerun of the year.
Senior
Tristan Musho led off the sixth with a walk as freshman
Casey Lester came in to pinch run. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Alicia Aughton. Fellow sophomore
Kristin Travers drew a walk as Gaynor came to the plate and doubled to right center, driving in Lester. Moran was clutch again, beating out a single to the shortstop and driving in Travers for her third RBI of the day which gave La Salle its final 5-1 lead.
The Explorers face off against Charlotte in a conference doubleheader scheduled to begin Saturday, May 4 at 11:00 AM at West Campus Field. This series marks the final game of the 2013 softball season. The team will also recognize graduating seniors
