BALTIMORE, Md. – La Salle softball kept up their winning ways in their first day at the Coppin State Tournament, knocking off Youngstown State 5-1 and UMass Lowell 5-2.

Alicia Aughton and Mary Cate Scott combined to stifle the Penguin bats in the tournament opener. Aughton got the start, going five innings and surrendering one run, while striking out two to score her third victory of the season. Scott closed out the Explorer victory, blanking the Penguins over the final two frames, while striking out one.

The Explorer pitching staff would get all the run support they would need in the opening frame. The Blue and Gold struck for all five of their runs in the bottom of the first.

With the bases loaded with Explorers, Alicia Aughton helped her cause with a single that plated Michelle Hagarty and Christina Bascara to send La Salle off and running.

Megan Hodgson came around on a wild pitch to add a third run, before Erica Reis singled home Suzanne Swanicke to push the La Salle lead to 4-0. Aughton would come around to score to cap the five-run inning.

Alicia Aughton got the victory in the nightcap against UMass Lowell, entering in relief.

The Explorers trailed 2-0 for the majority of the contest, however, the bats came alive when it mattered most. The Blue and Gold cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the 5th. They tacked on four more in the bottom of the sixth, with the key hit a double by Emily Moran that drove in two runs to push the Explorers ahead.

The Explorers will wrap up the Coppin State Tournament tomorrow with matchups against Mount St. Mary's and tournament host Coppin State.
