PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - La Salle softball was handled by A-10 top dog Fordham in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field. The Rams took down La Salle 11-2 in five innings in the opener. The Blue and Gold fell 8-2 in Game 2.
The Explorers (18-20; 9-7 A-10) celebrated Senior Day before the opener, honoring seniors
Danielle Cullen,
Jamie Dellinger,
Megan Hodgson, and
Emily Moran.
Unfortunately, it was the Rams that celebrated for the majority of the opener. Fordham plated runs in every inning but the first, knocking seven hits and scratching across 11 runs (8 earned) off
Alicia Aughton (L, 11-9). The junior struggled to handle the explosive Ram offense, allowing two homers in the contest.
The Explorers hung with the Rams for the first two innings. After two unearned runs came across due to a defensive miscue in the top half of the inning, Aughton (1-2; HR, 2RBI) got the runs right back in the bottom half. She laced a two-run laser to dead center to tie the game at 2 apiece.
The rally was short lived; however, as the Rams plated three runs in the third and five more in the fourth to break the game open.
Michele Daubman (W, 15-9) got the ball for Fordham, going all five innings. She did not allow much other than the Aughton blast, scattering two other hits, while striking out six.
Fordham (33-16; 13-1 A-10) jumped on the Explorers right off the bat in Game 2.
Mary Cate Scott (L, 7-11) did well to limit the Fordham offense, but got stung twice by the conference's top power hitter Elise Fortier. Scott went the distance, allowing eight runs (five earned), while fanning three.
The Rams plated one run in the second and four more in the third inning. Fortier launched a grand slam - her first of two homers in the game – to push the Rams to a 5-0 lead.
La Salle would battle back knocking in two runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap.
Christina Bascara (2-3; HR, RBI) launched a one out solo-shot to right center.
Alicia Aughton followed with a double and was lifted on the bases for
Danielle Cullen, who came around to score on a throwing error.
After the tough fourth, Ram starter Rachel Gillen (W, 8-3) was lifted in favor of Patty Maloney (SV, 4). She would hold the Explorers to just one hit, striking out four, over the final three innings to notch her fourth save of the season.
Fortier would blast her second homer of the game in the sixth to open up the lead to 8-2.
La Salle moved closer to locking down a berth to the A-10 Tournament despite the two losses. Dayton dropped the second game of a doubleheader against George Mason, lessening the Explorers magic number to one game.
The Explorers will return to action on Tuesday afternoon at Big 5 rival Temple. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
