A-10 Tournament Bracket
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – La Salle softball wrapped up their regular season Saturday afternoon, dropping both ends of the doubleheader at Saint Louis. Two big innings – a six run third in Game 1 and a seven run sixth in Game 2 – did in the Explorers on this day. La Salle came up short in the opener, falling 8-4. The Blue and Gold led for the majority of Game 2, but Saint Louis' seven spot in the home half of the sixth downed La Salle 10-6.
With the two losses, the Explorers fell to 9-9 in A-10 play. They will be the sixth seed in the A-10 tournament and will face off against Big 5 rival Saint Joseph's in the opening round.
La Salle (18-22; 9-9 A-10) jumped out to the early lead in the opener, as the Explorers got on the board in the second.
Suzanne Swanicke (2-3; R, RBI) led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double to right center by
Christina Bascara (2-2; 2B, RBI).
Alicia Aughton helped her cause with an RBI groundout, but unfortunately the Explorers could not add to the advantage.
Aughton (L, 11-10) had a rough outing again on Saturday. The Billikens answered the run in the top half with a two of their own in the bottom of the second. After the Explorers tied the game in the third, the Billikens knocked Aughton from the game in the home half. The junior would finish going just 2.1 innings, while allowing five hits and seven earned runs.
The Explorers attempted to comeback, plating runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not complete the rally.
La Salle rebounded quickly from the defeat in the opener. The Blue and Gold plated four runs in the top of the first to snatch a sizeable early lead.
Michelle Hagarty (2-2; 2HR, 2HBP) led off the game with solo-shot down the right field line. It was the fifth time this season she led off the game for the Explorers with a home run.
Unlike in the opener, the Explorers were able to keep the momentum going to add some needed insurance.
Suzanne Swanicke (1-4; R) and
Christina Bascara (1-2; R, BB) laced back-to-back singles with two outs. Aughton (3-3; 2B, HR, 3RBI) followed with a towering shot to dead center to push the lead to 4-0.
Aughton made the lead stand up for the majority of the game. She waded in and out of trouble, relinquishing nine hits and three runs through the first five frames. She was relieved by Scott (L, 7-12) who was tagged with the loss, after allowing five runs in the sixth. Aughton returned to finish the game, allowing two more runs of her own, as the Billiken bats broke out for seven runs total in the frame.
Hagarty launched her second homer of the game – her team leading ninth of the season – to start the rally in the seventh. Unfortunately, the Explorers could not maintain the rally, falling 10-6.
The Explorers will play the three seed Saint Joseph's at 2:30 PM on Wednesday.
