Box Score 2 DELAND, Fla.- The La Salle softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Stetson, 7-1, 7-0, to kick off their 2015 campaign.
Game one saw the Hatters jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first. However
Alicia Aughton was able to limit the damage as she stranded two Stetson baserunners on to end the inning.
The Explorers answered back in the top of the second as they scored one run of their own.
Erica Reis led things off with a base on balls and was advanced into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt from
Tori Gollie. Reis came around and score when
Linnette Siedler put the ball in play and the Stetson pitcher threw it away. Reis run cut the deficit to just 2-1.
However, the hosts would respond in the bottom half of the inning with four runs off of three hits and an error.
La Salle worked the count effectively all game as they drew 12 walks but were unable to capitalize as they left 11 of those runners stranded.
Mary Cate Scott was effective in relief for the Explorers as she threw 4.1 innings allowing only two hits and two walks with no earned runs.
Game two was dominated by Stetson pitcher Chelsea Hostetler who threw a complete game allowing four hits while striking out eight Explorers.
Christina Bascara started things off quickly as she singled to left field to start off the game. She was able to advance to scoring position on a wild pitch but she couldn't come around as she ended the inning stranded there.
The Hatters scored two runs on three hits in the home half of the inning. However, freshman
McKenzie Peace was able to limit the damage as she used a strike out and a line out to strand three would be scorers on base.
The home team blew things open in the bottom of the fourth as they scored five runs on five hits to give Stetson a 7-0 lead from which they wouldn't look back.
Freshman
Taylor Rohrbaugh doubled to center field in the bottom of the fifth for her first career hit. Senior
Alicia Aughton recorded an infield hit in the top of the sixth but was unable to come around to score as she was stranded on second.
Mary Cate Scott again had an effective outing in the circle in relief. She threw three innings allowing only a single hit while recording three strikeouts.
The Explorers return to action on Friday as they kick off the Stetson Classic against Kansas at 11 a.m. and an afternoon matchup against Stetson.
