Box Score AMHERST, Ma.-The La Salle softball team fell 8-4 to top-seeded Dayton on Friday afternoon to end their run in the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship.
The Explorers finished in fourth place in the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship thanks to back-to-back wins in the losers bracket on the first two days of the championship.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Obert finished 2-3 on the day with a two run homer in the second inning. The homer was her third on the season.
The Explorers were able to jump out to an early lead thanks to the Obert homer. With two outs the Fairless Hills native gave La Salle a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a shot to left field. The homer brought in sophomore
Suzanne Swanicke who had led off the inning with a walk.
The Flyers cut into the lead the bottom half of the inning. Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Tiffany Ricks led off the inning with a solo homer to cut the lead to 2-1. Kailee Budicin followed that up with a single to left field, but a double play followed by a strikeout got La Salle out of the inning without any further damage done.
Dayton took the lead thanks to a pair of three run innings in the third and fourth. This gave the top seeded Flyers a 7-2 lead thanks in part to nine hits through four innings.
La Salle fought back into things in the sixth inning grabbing a pair of runs. With two outs, Swanicke and freshman
Valerie Pineiro had back-to-back RBI hits plating sophomores
Michelle Hagarty and
Christina Bascara who had reached via a double and error respectively to cut things to 7-4.
However, the top seeded Flyers answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-4 heading to the seventh inning.
Despite Obert leading off the seventh with a double the Explorers couldn't mount a comeback and Dayton advanced with the 8-4 win.
