Softball Heads to UMBC for Final Non-Conference Weekend

BALTIMORE, Md. – The La Salle softball team returns to action as they head to Baltimore to take part in the UMBC Spring Classic. The Explorers will play four games over the three days including a pair against Sacred Heart and single matchups with UMBC and Siena.

Scouting the Explorers

-La Salle enters the weekend after grabbing two wins a week ago at the Liberty Softball Classic. The Explorers grabbed a 6-2 win over Norfolk State and a 6-4 win over Liberty during their time in Lynchburg.

-The Explorers are led at the plate by Kendra Heyer with a strong .444 average and a pair of RBI. Three other Explorers have batting averages over .260 in Christina Bascara (.294), Valerie Pineiro (.265), and Angelina Refice (.263).

-Sophomore Valerie Pineiro has a team-high seven RBI on the years as well as four runs scored on nine hits.
-Four pitchers have toed the rubber so far this season for the Explorers. Senior Mary Cate Scott has thrown a team-high 27 innings and owns a 3-1 record on the year.

Scouting the Pioneers

-Sacred Heart enters the weekend having won two of four games at the Liberty University Invitational last weekend. The Pioneers lost its first two against Rhode Island (3-0) and Norfolk State (7-6). The Pioneers closed out the weekend with wins against Liberty (3-2) and La Salle (3-1).

-Senior Nicole Deissler leads the Pioneers with a .333 average through 11 games this season. Sacred Heart have spread out their offensive output with five different players knocking a homer and Lauren Delgadillo  leading the team with seven RBI.

-Junior Jamie Carlson has been the primary pitcher for Sacred Heart this season. She has thrown 42.2 innings a 3.12 ERA to her name. Freshman Emily Orosco also leads Sacred Heart with 45 strikeouts.

Scouting the Retrievers

-UMBC comes into the weekend having split a double header against Hampton midweek. UMBC won the first half of the doubleheader, (12-3), while falling in the second, (7-1).

- Morgan Peyou and Bridget O'Malley lead the way at the plate for the Retrievers. Peyou leads the team with a .455 average and O'Malley is close behind at .429. Carly Lesko has a team-high 28 RBIs and 9 home-runs scored on the year.

-The Retrievers have used four pitchers this season. Kim Puccio leads the team with 4.29 ERA with 38 strikeouts. The team has an average ERA of 5.18.

Scouting the Saints

-Siena come into the weekend after winning one of three games at the Buccaneer Classic. The Saints dropped its first two games against ETSU, 10-4, and Morehead State, 9-1, before taking ETSU in the final game, 3-2.                                                                                                                                                                                                            
-Brook Taylor leads the team with a .364 average.  Madysen Cossack leads Siena with seven RBI on the year.

-Sophomore Lauren Butts leads the team with a 4.66 ERA and a record of 4-3. The Saints other main pitcher Danielle Cacciola, has a 6.23 ERA and a record of 2-3.

Next up

La Salle heads to Penn for a doubleheader on Wednesday before opening the conference season at George Washington next weekend.
