Men's Soccer Seeks Best Start in Program History This Weekend

Men's Soccer | September 16, 2016

PHILADELPHIA – The Men's Soccer team looks to continue its winning ways this weekend with tough matchup against Soccer Six opponent Penn. The game carries potentially big implications for La Salle as a win would mean the best start in program history through seven games. Live stats and video will be available.

This will be the two teams' first meeting since 2011 when the Quakers bested the Blue and Gold, 2-0. They also shut out the Explorers in the match prior to that, a 5-0 defeat in 2010. Interestingly enough, the entire 2016 La Salle coaching staff was involved in both of those games—Head Coach Rob Irvine as an assistant coach with Penn, Assistant Coach Travis Cantrell as a player with Penn, Assistant Coach John McCarthy as the starting goalie for La Salle, and Assistant Coach Bob Wilkinson on the sideline for La Salle.

More recently, Penn hasn't blanked an opponent since October 2, 2015. Since that date, La Salle has shut out seven opponents; including four this year registered by goaltender Mike Kirk.

Scouting the Explorers

-At 5-1, La Salle is tied with the '96 team for its best start to the season in program history. The '96 team tied its seventh game, meaning that if the Explorers defeat the Quakers, it'll be their best start in program history through seven games.

-Colman Kennedy scored the game-winning goal in the Explorers' last game, a win at James Madison, to give his team its third 1-0 win of the season. Four of the team's five wins have come by a one-goal margin.

-La Salle is outscoring opponents 6-3 on the road this season with a 3-0 record.

-The Quakers present a very young roster with just seven combined juniors and seniors compared to 17 freshmen and sophomores.
