Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. - The La Salle softball team continued to roll on Saturday, winning two more games at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational in Maryland. The Explorers had split the doubleheader on Friday, improving their record to 3-1 after Saturday's games. In the morning contest, the Blue and Gold topped Saint Peter's, 10-2, with two home runs in the game including a grand slam by
Marissa Ewald. In the afternoon, the Explorers defeated host UMBC, 5-4.
In game one, the Explorers crossed the plate at least once every inning.
Jackie Heim, who hit two dingers on Friday, reached base in the first at bat of the game and quickly scored on an
Emily Conaway double to put La Salle on the board. The next batter,
Emma Schweigert, singled up the middle to score Conaway. Heim struck again in the next inning, sending a double down the left field line for an RBI. She finished two-for-three.
In the third inning, Ewald blasted a grand slam to put the Explorers up 7-0. One inning later,
Ashley Mendenhall hit a three-run shot.
Every member of the lineup had at least one hit in the game.
Morgan Orlowski started the game and picked up her first win of the season. She threw all five innings and struck out one, allowing just four hits.
La Salle continued to flex its muscles in game two. The Explorers found themselves trailing heading into the second inning, but found a way to score when
Taylor Rohrbaugh crossed the plate on a passed ball. They did most of their damage in the third inning though when Schweigert tripled to score Conaway and then Rohrbaugh sent out the Explorers' third home run of the day to score Conaway.
UMBC chipped away with a run in the fourth to cut La Salle's lead to 4-3 going into the fifth. But Ewald gave the Explorers the insurance run they needed with a single to score Mendenhall in the fifth.
Despite a Retriever run in the sixth,
Reilly Gearhart was able to hold off UMBC and record her first save.
Marlo Roadcap started the game and struck out two over six innings.
La Salle wraps up the invitational on Sunday with a game against Saint Peter's at 1:30 PM.
