PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University men's tennis team put up a strong showing against Atlantic 10 opponent Duquesne, falling to the Dukes by a 6-1 margin that was much closer than the final score indicates.
To begin the match, Duquesne took an early lead in the doubles point battle with a 6-0 victory at No. 3. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches were hotly contested, coming down to the wire on side-by-side courts.
The duo of freshmen
Connor Merrill and
Rogelio Gonzalez fell by a 7-5 margin, just before their teammates at No. 1,
Francesco Mowrey and
Tomas Christian, edged out their opponents to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Mowrey was the lone victor for the Explorers, defeating Adam Blasinsky, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. However, Gonzalez and sophomore
Patrick Pascual both took a set off their opponents at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.
Gonzalez earned a 6-1 win in the second set before falling, 6-4, in the third, while Pascual took an early one-set lead with a 6-0 win before dropping the second and third.
