PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University men's tennis team begins its 2019 spring season this weekend with a pair of road matches. The Explorers will begin their dual match schedule with an Atlantic 10 contest against Fordham in the Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday, Jan. 26. The following day, La Salle and Drexel will battle in a city matchup at Hecht/Hamlin Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE EXPLORERS
- La Salle returns five of its six starters from a season ago, including senior Francesco Mowrey who led the Explorers with 10 singles victories a year ago.
- In addition to his 10 individual wins, Mowrey dropped five other matches after taking his opponent the full three sets.
- Sophomores Rogelio Gonzalez, Connor Merrill and Colin Lucius join junior Patrick Pascual as the other primary starters in the singles lineup for La Salle from last season.
- Junior Andrija Bozovic and freshman Nassim Fenjiro will battle for the final singles slot, with Fenjiro matriculating to La Salle all the way from Morocco.
- As a team, the Explorers posted their first Atlantic 10 victory since 2011 with a 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure.
SCOUTING FORDHAM
- The Rams will open their season with the matchup against La Salle on Saturday, after finishing last year with a 14-7 record and a 2-1 mark in the Atlantic 10.
- The two teams tangled last year in the Bronx, with Fordham coming away with a 6-1 win.
- Mowrey defeated Lutwin de Macar at the top singles spot, 7-5, 6-4, while Gonzalez and Pascual pushed their opponents to a third and decisive set at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
SCOUTING DREXEL
- The Dragons have already played three dual matches against top competition this spring, falling to reigning Atlantic 10 champion VCU, reigning Patriot League champion Navy and last year's Big South champion Campbell.
- Against the Midshipmen, Armstrong State transfer Alvaro Cruz Chamorro earned a win at the No. 1 singles position over Peter Lohrbach, 6-2, 6-2.
- In last year's La Salle-Drexel match, Lucius picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 6 singles in a 6-1 team loss.
