ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Riding a four-game win streak, the La Salle women's basketball team (5-1) is geared up for the Navy Classic at the U.S. Naval Academy this weekend. The Explorers will take on the UMBC Retrievers (2-4) on Saturday at 1 p.m. and play either Navy or Kennesaw State on Sunday depending on the results of Saturday's games.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- La Salle heads into the Navy Classic at 5-1 overall, riding a four-game win streak. The Explorers will play UMBC on Saturday and either Navy or Kennesaw State on Sunday.
- The Blue & Gold are fresh off a convincing win over Coppin State, 79-46. In the game, the Explorers scored a season high 79 points and held the Eagles to a defensive season best 46 points. Twelve different Explorers tallied a point, with many setting career or season highs. The victory was the first of 30 points or more since taking down Delaware State by 40 points on Dec. 21, 2016.
- The win over Coppin state pushed the win streak to four games, which is the best since the middle of the 2014-15 season. It's also the best start since the 2006-07 team went 6-0.
- Freshmen and sophomores are making up 62.3% of the Explorers scoring this season, including 55.7% among the team's top four scorers in freshmen Claire Jacobs, sophomore Kayla Spruill, freshman Jordon Lewis, and freshman Amy Jacobs.
- La Salle has three players at or close to double-digit point totals. Freshman Claire Jacobs is leading the charge with 12.0 ppg on 41.5% from the floor and 42.9% from long range. She's dropped 10+ points in four games this season and 15+ in three.
- Sophomore Kayla Spruill is at 10.3 ppg, adding 5.3 rpg. Her rebounding efforts have her tied for second on the team.
- Freshman Jordon Lewis rounds out the trio with 9.0 ppg on 40.4% shooting. The rookie is tied with Spruill for second on the team with 5.3 rpg.
- Senior Shalina Miller tops the team with 9.0 rpg and 2.7 bpg. With 16 blocks so far this season, Miller ranks first in the A-10 and 14th in the nation. The senior is 22 deflections shy of tying the all-time record set by Amy Griffin '18 at 151.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS:
- UMBC is 2-4 on the season after dropping its last three contests.
- The Retrievers are averaging 65.5 ppg on 45.5% from the floor and 36.8% from long range.
- Te'yJah Oliver leads the team with 21.3 ppg. Oliver is hitting 47.9% of her shots, including 45.9% from three-point range.
- Janee'a Summers is next on the team, scoring 10.3 points per outing with a 45.5% field goal percentage. Summers also leads the squad with 7.5 boards per game.
SERIES HISTORY:
- La Salle holds the all-time series record over UMBC, 3-1, in a series that dates back to 1977.
- The Explorers claimed the first three matchups over the Retrievers, however fell in the teams' most recent battle in 2015. In that game, UMBC won, 60-29, in Baltimore.
