Softball Heads to Penn for Wednesday Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball team (5-10) will head to crosstown rival, Penn (7-8), on Wednesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively.
 
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
  • La Salle is 5-10 overall on the 2019 campaign after a 3-2 outing at the USF/Clearwater Recreation Showcase Tournament this past weekend.
  • Over the weekend, junior Emily Conaway led the Explorers as she hit .444 with eight hits. Of those eight, four were for extra bases with three doubles and one homer. She also drove in seven runs and scored four.
  • Sophomore pitcher Morgan Orlowski went 2-0 in the tournament and led La Salle's pitching efforts. The second year pitcher tossed two complete games with a 2.50 ERA. In the win over Brown, she had a career high seven strikeouts.
  • At the plate, senior Emma Schweigert and Conaway are leading the team. Schweigert is hitting .311 with 14 hits on the season, including a pair of home runs and doubles.
  • Conaway has a .306 batting average and is leading the team with 29 total bases, 15 hits, 12 RBIs, and six doubles.
  • The duo is tied for the team lead with two home runs and eight runs apiece.
  • In the circle, freshman Cailey Joyce has been the team's workhorse, pitching 60.0 innings in 11 appearances. The rookie has a 2.92 ERA, allowing 25 earned runs on 84 hits and 13 walks. Joyce has set down 30 batters on strikes this season. The Mechanicsburg, Pa. native ranks third in the conference in BB/7 at 1.52.
  • Orlowski has seen action in eight games this season, throwing 36.2 innings. The West Chester, Pa. native holds a 4.39 ERA, allowing 23 earned runs on 55 hits and 14 walks. Orlowski has struck out 22 batters faced.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS:
  • Penn enters Wednesday's doubleheader 7-8 on the year and has dropped four of its last six games. The team is 1-1 at home this season.
  • The Quakers have four players hitting .300 or above and are led by Sarah Ketring at .357. Ketring has started all 12 games played.
  • Emma Nedley is pacing the squad with three dingers and 27 total bases. Nedley is hitting .313 on the campaign and has six RBIs.
  • Lucy Yang leads Penn with eight RBIs.
  • On the rubber, Tabitha Dyer is pacing in the with a 4-1 record over 34.2 innings of work. Dyer has allowed seven earned runs over her seven appearances on 32 hits and 18 walks. She's punched out 16 this season.
  • Jennifer Brann is next on the team with 32.1 innings and a 3.68 ERA. Brann has struck out 19, while allowing 17 earned runs on 26 hits and 14 walks.
COMMON CONNECTION:
  • Head coach Brooke Darreff and Penn assistant coach Dani Gonzalez played together at Saint Joseph's. Darreff was the Hawks' catcher and Gonzalez started in the circle. 
  • Former La Salle graduate assistant coach, Kelsey Dominik, is now an assistant coach with the Quakers. Dominik spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Explorers.
