PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball team (10-27, 3-12 A-10) welcomes crosstown rival, Saint Joseph's (21-19, 9-6 A-10), to West Campus Field on Wednesday for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader. Both games with be streamed on ESPN+.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- La Salle enters play at 10-27 overall and 3-12 in the conference.
- Most recently, the Explorers took one of three games at George Mason. In the lone win, freshman Cailey Joyce powered the team in the circle and at the plate. The rookie tossed a complete game shutout with five strikeouts and scored the only run of the game with a solo shot to left center.
- The Blue and Gold have four players hitting .270 or above. Senior Emma Schweigert paces the bunch at .287. She also leads the team with 12 walks and is tied for the team high with five homers.
- Junior Emily Conaway is having a breakout season at the plate. The Berwyn, Pa. native is second on the team with a .286 batting average and is pacing the squad in hits, runs, doubles, RBIs, and total bases.
- Joyce (.279) and sophomore Ashley Mendenhall (.270) round out the quarter at .270 or above.
- Joyce has proven her dual threat capabilities as she's also the team's top pitcher. She holds a 7-11 record with a 4.49 ERA in 27 appearances. Over 131.0 innings of work, Joyce has 68 strikeouts.
- Sophomore Morgan Orlowski is the team's other prominent pitcher with 23 appearances and a 3-14 record. Orlowski boasts a 4.25 ERA over 107.0 innings.
- Schweigert is third all-time with 21 home runs and is six behind Megan Hodgson to tie second place and seven behind tying Michelle Hagarty for first place.
- Conaway is three doubles shy of tying the program single season doubles record, which she set a season ago. She's also seven away from tying the all-time mark.
- La Salle has started six different freshmen this season with four starting 32 games or more. Rookie Mackenzie Vogler is the only one to start all 37 games on the year. The Explorers are second in the Atlantic 10 with six different freshmen appearing in a starting lineup this season.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS:
- SJU is 21-19, 9-6 A-10 heading into Wednesday. Most recently, the Hawks were swept by Fordham.
- Four different Hawks are batting .300 of above. Sarah Ostaszewski leads the team at .372 and paces the squad in hits, doubles, total bases, and is tied for the team high in RBIs.
- Ashley Ventura and Amanda Herr have been the workhorses in the circle. Each have at least 25 appearances on the season and at least 95.0 innings of work. Ventura is 11-13 overall and Herr is 7-2.
- Collectively, the team hits .258 and allows opponents to hit .285.
