PHILADELPHIA – Heading into the second week of its season, the La Salle softball team (0-4) will fly to New Mexico to take part in the Lobo Classic. Over the three-day weekend, the Explorers play in five games with a pair against the hosting Lobos and Northern Colorado and a single bout with South Dakota.
LA SALLE AT THE PLATE:
- After the opening weekend at the Wings ETC Classic, four different Explorers have multiple hits on the year.
- Rookies Mia Recenello and Lex Ortman sit atop the squad, slashing .333 and .308, respectively. Recenello has a pair of hits in six trips, while Ortman leads the team with four base knocks.
- Junior Ashley Mendenhall is the third Explorers hitting .300 or above after the first weekend of play. Mendenhall has three hits, all doubles, and a pair of RBIs.
- Rookie Casey Walker is the only Explorer to launch a homer this year. Her three-run jack was her first collegiate hit.
LA SALLE IN THE CIRCLE:
- Sophomore Kelly Toomey saw the bulk of the action on the rubber for the Blue & Gold. The transfer tossed 14.1 innings of work in the opening weekend with 12 strikeouts and a 3.42 ERA.
- Freshman Jenna Khantzian made her debut last weekend with 6.1 innings of work. She holds a 12.16 ERA in her small workload.
SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA:
- The Coyotes are 8-8 overall after going 4-1 last weekend at the Madeira Beach Invitational II. South Dakota is led by fourth-year head coach Robert Wagner.
- As a team, the Coyotes are hitting .290 after its 16 games of play. Five batters post a batting average above .300 and are led by Jordyn Pender at .432.
- Sarah Lisko and Alexis Devers lead the pitching efforts. Both have made at least 10 appearances this season.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO:
- The Lobos are 6-8 on the campaign and riding a three-game losing streak under second-year head coach Paula Congleton.
- Cameryn O'Grady leads a Lobos team hitting .239 on the season with a .368 batting average.
- Brianna Sanchez and Kiana Spencer have each made 7+ appearances in the circle for most on the staff.
SCOUTING NORTHERN COLORADO:
- The Bears sit at 3-12 overall to start its 2020 season under second-year head coach Ben Garcia.
- Northern Colorado is hitting .274 as a club with six Bears above the .300 mark.
- A trio of hurlers have recorded six appearances or better for the Bears, with Lainey Hanehan and Erin Caviness each making eight. Collectively, the staff posts a 7.35 ERA and allows opponents to hit .379.
