NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle defenders
Shea Collins and
Lauren Costello each earned spots to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, as announced by the league office on Thursday morning.
Collins turned in a stellar performance in her freshman campaign, cementing a spot at left back with 16 starts and 17 appearances on the season. The Boiling Springs native took just two games to record her first collegiate point, grabbing an assist against UConn. Collins made it two games in two with an assist after tallying her second assist of the season just days later against Colgate. The rookie finished her season with four total assists, leading the team while finishing tied-fifth in points on the Explorer squad with four. In addition to her attacking prowess down the left side of the pitch, Collins helped her team to four shutouts on the season.
Costello, a native of Mechanicsburg, Pa., slotted right into the back line to help bolster the Explorer defense. The rookie joined Collins in helping register four clean sheets on the season defensively. The freshman also provided sparks on the attacking side of the pitch, trailing only
Emily Banashefski's eight points as the freshman was one of three Explorers to finish with six points on the season. It took six games to grab her first collegiate point, an assist against Columbia, before Costello delivered the game-winning goal and her first of her career as an Explorer in the win over Saint Francis (Pa.) in 1-0 fashion. Costello had her most impactful game of her early career in the 2-1 win over Duquesne, registering an assist before turning in the game-winning goal for the Explorers to defeat the Dukes on the road for a career-high three points on the evening.
La Salle finished the year 6-9-2, 4-5-1 in A-10 play. The Explorers barely missed out on a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, finishing ninth in conference action.
Saint Louis' Emily Gaebe was named Rookie of the Year while VCU took three of the five superlative awards.
