PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's soccer put forth a dominant offensive performance against Seton Hall on Friday afternoon, beating the Pirates, 6-2, in the Explorers' opening game of the Villanova tournament. Sophomore
Kelsey Haycook recorded three goals, including the game-winner, and an assist for a total of seven points.
“It was important for our team to bounce back from a weekend with two losses and get the next win,” explained Haycook. “We played together and were resilient in our attack and it paid off with a great team win.”
Seton Hall (5-2-0) got on the board quickly, scoring a mere 78 seconds into the game when junior Brittney Albrecht crossed a ball into senior Stephanie Soma for a header to the right side of the net.
The Explorers responded quickly and dominated the attack over the next 20 minutes, narrowly missing the equalizer on several attempts. It wasn't until the 22
nd minute that junior
Renee Washington, who celebrates her 20
th birthday today, scored an unassisted goal from just outside the 18-yard box to ignite an offensive explosion.
Less than six minutes later, Haycook netted her first of three consecutive unanswered goals off a pass from Washington to give La Salle the 2-1 advantage going into halftime.
Haycook would net the next two goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half and freshman
Jessika Kagan would follow suit with the first goal of her collegiate career off a pass from fellow rookie Kelsey Celine at the 73:16 mark giving the Explorers a 5-2 lead.
After relinquishing a goal to the Pirates just over a minute later, freshman
Chrissy Vollrath found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career of a cross from Haycook and sophomore
Anna Dolhansky to secure the 6-2 victory.
Prior to today's game, Seton Hall had only surrendered two goals during its 2012 campaign.
“It was great to see the team come together against a tough Seton Hall team,” said assistant coach
Ally Kenney. “Our offense connected and capitalized and we'll use this great team win to spring board us into Sunday's game against Villanova.”
Sunday's game is set for 4:30 pm at Villanova. A live stream will be available
