One of the best teams in school history, the 1988-89 La Salle women's basketball team went 28-3 and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The team still holds single-season school record with 28 victories, including a perfect 4-0 mark in Philadelphia Big 5 games. La Salle earned a No. 9 seed in the East Regional of the 1989 NCAA Tournament, and defeated eighth-seeded UConn, 72-63, in the opening round. The loss remains one of only two first-round NCAA Tournament defeats handed to Hall of Fame coach Geno Auriemma. The Explorers would go on to fall in the second round to eventual national champion Tennessee, led by Bridgette Gordon and Pat Summitt. The team was ranked in the Associated Press, USA Today and Sports Illustrated polls, and was as high as #18 in the AP poll during the year. Individually, Tracy Sneed was named First Team All-MAAC, Kelly Greenberg & Sheila Wall were named Second Team All-MAAC, and head coach John Miller was named MAAC Coach of the Year.
