James Henry was one of the most prominent and highly-respected athletic administrators in the Mid-Atlantic, joining La Salle as its Athletic Director in 1930. Over his 35-year tenure at La Salle, he developed nine varsity sports. He helped organize crew, making La Salle one of the first Catholic colleges to do so.

Henry also entered the coaching ranks, doubling as the line coach for football and becoming head coach for the 1940 and 1941 seasons. He even coached basketball in 1931, logging a 15-4 record.

A finance instructor at La Salle, Henry was granted an Honorary Degree (LL.D., 1955) from the University. Outside of La Salle, Henry served as a football official for 25 years. He attended Villanova, where he was an honorable mention All-America basketball player.
