Mark McElwee was a decorated swimmer who broke team records in the individual medley and backstroke several times. As sophomore, team won the Middle Atlantic Conference dual meet and championship title.The Explorers finished fifth at NCAA Nationals. Individually, McElwee was named an All-American in the 200 Backstroke and was a member of 800 Freestyle Relay. The following year, competed in the 400 medley relay as backstroker and butterflyer, and also took part in the 200 Butterfly, 200 Individual Medley and 200 Backstroke. During his career, he medaled in every event he swum at the Middle Atlantic Conference meet and the NCAA East Coast Championships. As a senior, he once again medaled in every event entered at the MAC Championships. McElwee was named All-American for second time in his career as a butterflyer in the 400 Medley Relay at NCAA Nationals.
